Traveling with baby: a few tips to make your family trip enjoyable

Little girl using smart phone in airplane.

Many parents avoid traveling with a baby because they imagine that it will be too difficult ... Although it is true that the experience requires a little organization, there is really no reason to panic. It is indeed often easier to move with an infant than with a child of 2-3 years and over ... The first needs only your arms to feel good! Here are some tips to make your trip enjoyable.

Planning?

The most important thing to avoid being caught off guard during your baby trip is to plan your trip.
You know your child better than anyone and know what he needs. Ask yourself the following questions before preparing the travel bag:
  • What does he eat, what time?
  • How often should you change your diaper?
  • Does he have a favorite toy or toy?
  • Etc.
By taking into account all the little habits of your baby, it will be easier for you to make your bag to make up for all the unexpected. Above all, be considerate, but still be logical: no need to bring 6 spare clothes in the diaper bag for a 2-hour ride! That would only increase the weight of the famous bag ... which will be found on your shoulders, in addition to the baby, the probable stroller and your belongings!

1.The different means of transport?

Depending on the duration and destination of your trip, your planning will not be the same ...

Plane

Babies who are one week old can already fly, provided the flight is relatively short (2 hours). For a long-haul flight, it is best to wait until your child has reached 3-4 weeks.
When you make your reservation, mention that you want a "baby seat", which is usually decorated with a small removable bed.
If you are breastfeeding your baby, put him in the breast during take-off and landing: his ears will not clog if he sucks. Make sure you have a bottle of water or juice or pacifier for non-breastfed children.
Remember to bring warm clothes, even in the middle of the summer, because the air conditioning could bother the baby.
Give your child water (or breast) often during the trip so that he stays well hydrated.
You can ask the staff to heat the baby food (see the safety rules in your departure city for the things you will be allowed to bring on board).
Avoid toys that make noise so as not to inconvenience other passengers: those who like to complain will have one less reason to look at you "crooked".
In case, there is no turbulence, get up from time to time to walk with baby in the aisles, especially if it is crying or boring.
And finally, do not pay attention to people who throw you looks or unpleasant comments when the baby is unhappy: they have certainly never had children!
Bus
Things to take into account differ depending on whether it is a short trip or several hours. In the first case, it is usually possible to leave the baby in his stroller, because city buses often benefit from lowered floors. If you are taking a longer trip, you will probably have to leave your stroller in the baggage compartment to avoid blocking the passage. Again, plan everything that baby might need during the trip (diapers, toys, food, etc.).

Taxi

It is very rare for companies to offer car seats for babies, but it is tolerated not to use them ... If you fear for the safety of your little one, you can always bring your own, knowing that you will not be able to leave it for the duration of your trip!

Train

Little used here, trains are however the means of travel par excellence in Europe. they are so comfortable, fast and much more pleasant than the bus for trips of a few hours. On the other hand, think about not loading too much because you will have to carry your luggage to get on and off the train and in the train stations (which are often without lifts.)

2. To sleep somewhere other than at home?

Very small children (4 months and under) generally have not yet acquired a very regular sleep cycle and so it will not be very difficult for them to fall asleep elsewhere than at home. Of course, this statement is perfectly relative, since every child is unique ...
However, no matter where you plan to spend one or more nights, you should follow all the usual safety rules, and especially to ensure the comfort of your toddler. There are many ways to sleep comfortably while on the move. Also be aware that if you do not follow your child's schedule and normal sleep routine, it will not interfere with his or her long-term development, but he may sleep less well than usual. This has more to do with the general excitement than with the place ...

3. In the hotel

All the establishments have bassinettes, which they will put at your availability on request during the reservation. The bed will already be in the room upon your arrival. It is a good idea to pack your bedding (sheets and baby's favorite blanket, or turbulette) so that your child still feels "known ground. The smell of his sheets can greatly reassure him and help him fall asleep.

4. With friends, family

When there is no bed where you intend to spend the night, you will have to solve this problem yourself. The most common option is to purchase an umbrella bed. These compact beds that fit into a suitable bag. They exist in all styles and budgets and can fold and unfold in a jiffy.
You could also consider buying a mini bunk that fits directly in the bed between parents. These bunks are generally used by parents who love cododo, but you could enjoy them while traveling, even if you want the baby to stay in your room when you're at home.

4. Some more tips

Finally, do not forget these tips that can also make your life easier:
  • Bring your baby carrier: it will be very useful when the stroller is in the luggage compartment, or when you want to sleep by plane or bus. Baby will easily fall asleep, and you will not need to hold it constantly to make sure it does not fall!
  • Never hesitate to ask for help: the staff of the plane is available to warm baby bottles or food, and many people will be happy to carry your stroller if you ask them nicely!
  • Dress comfortably. And dress baby with easy-to-wear and remove clothes for diaper changes (the snaps between the legs are perfectly suited!)
  • Think about heart-warming sweaters if you are breastfeeding, and do not forget to bring a small blanket if you want a little privacy during feedings.
Have at your fingertips what you need for common little sores (Tempra, Gel for teeth, etc.)
Finally ... Be patient and enjoy your holidays!

baby communication: how can you understand the needs of your child?

Baby communication Long before he can speak, your baby tries to communicate his needs, desires and emotions with signals.  Babies learn to communicate in different ways before they know how to talk. Thus, in a few months, your baby emits different types of crying, cooing and facial expressions to see your reaction and that of those around him. He soon learns to exploit the cries and movements that bring him the satisfaction he seeks. Knowing that he can get what he wants help to gain greater esteem of him and feeds his desire to go further, to discover things. When your baby makes sounds, repeat them after him and add in some of your own. Meeting the needs of your child does not spoil him. The need for human contacts is innate. By fulfilling your baby's needs, you get to know him better and give him the opportunity to get to know you better; and above all, you tell him he can count on you. Learn ... to understand each other! Learning to "read" your baby...
